Called Prosane, this packaging solution developed by Proteme is a natural alternative to the phytosanitary products used after harvesting.
At every stage of fruit and vegetable production, solutions are emerging to reduce food waste. Proteme has decided to work with fruit and vegetable producers to intervene after the harvest and before the produce is put on the shelves.
Launched in 2021 by Paul Malfoy and Valentin Sabatet, the company has developed an edible coating, called Prosane, which surrounds the produce to protect it from external hazards. Invisible and removable by simply washing with water, this solution aims to replace the phytosanitary products used after harvesting to extend the shelf life of fruit and vegetables.
It took three years of research and development to come up with the first version of Prosane, which, the founders claim, increases the shelf life of a handful of bananas by 10 days and reduces the amount of mold on citrus fruits by 2.5 without altering their taste or appearance.
Since the start of operations, nearly 600,000 euros have been raised from private investors, and one million euros in government funding has been made available.
To take its research even further and prepare for its arrival on the market, Proteme is now looking to raise a further 4 million euros, and hopes to raise between 200 and 600,000 euros via the sowefund financing platform open to all.
